主題と目標/授業の手法など

This course is designed to assist students to explore various topics underlying international development from both theoretical and methodological perspectives. We particularly focus on the human capital accumulation which is regarded as a driving force of economic development. More specifically, among the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) proposed by the United Nations, we will discuss (i) universal education, (ii) gender equality, and (iii) child/maternal health. At the end of the course, students are expected to answer the following specific questions (*) and then propose policy recommendations that decision-makers might utilize in order to optimize certain goals, given budgetary and other constraints. Students will become knowledgeable about economic/statistical analyses of human capital development.

(*) The specific questions that students are expected to answer are: (a) why does "universal education" bring economic development?; (b) why is gender equality in education really important?; (c) Are children's education more effective than adult education?; (d) Does money matters for education? (e) Does maternal health affect children's outcomes later on in their life?
