NONE We will use recent examples of geopolitical events and incidents (e.g. Covid 19 impact) to discuss some of the most important aspects of modern (cyber) society. Students are encouraged to follow activities of the Cyber Civilization Research Center. |

科目概要
The objective of this course is to give students an introduction to critical legal thinking by studying the nature of “law” and providing an overview of “legal reasoning”. The topics will address many different issues and debates but we will focus particularly on the following questions:
What is the role of law in our society?
How does law justify itself?
How does law relate to ethics and morality?
What happens when opposing rights conflict with each other?
What defines power in a juridical system?
What are the strength and weaknesses of democracy?

The goal of this class is to develop logical and legal thinking skills while expanding a deeper understanding of the many faces of law and its role in society. Because of the nature of this class and the way it is conducted, students are expected to participate actively in the discussions and contribute to the debate through students’ presentations. The class will be held in English and give students an additional opportunity to work, argue and present in English.

授業計画
第1回 Orientation and Introduction
The first session will give an overview of the course, and give students an opportunity to introduce themselves, explain why they are taking the course and what their interests are:
- Overview of the class and the following weeks
- Discuss the following questions: What is law? What is “legal thinking”?
第2回 Legal Thinking
- Thinking and discussing about norms and values, culture and society
- History of law
- Morals, ethics and law: Basic philosophy and basic jurisprudence
- Different schools of thought in general jurisprudence (e.g. “natural law”, “legal positivism”)
- Connection between law and morality?

Different schools of thought in general jurisprudence (e.g. “natural law”, “legal positivism”)
