This course is about techniques and strategies for making presentations of academic nature. The main objective of the course is to strengthen academic communication competency. The course is taught in English.
The language components of the course are speaking, listening and open discussion. Students improve on these skills through weekly speech projects done either individually or in small groups.
At the end of the course, students will be able to argue and present their personal ideas in a manner that is academically sound and logical.

The course is aimed at helping students strengthen their ability to make impressive presentations. The course uses a step-by-step method that goes from simple and short speeches to the types of presentations that are more technically advanced. Brief discussions sessions that follow presentations are an important part of the course. They also play a role in the overall grading.

The course has no textbook. Materials for class activities are provided by the instructor.

提出課題・試験・成績評価の方法など

Grading is based on a) three target speeches (45%); b) one debate (20%); c) active participation in open discussions (15%) and d) a final presentation (20%). The Grade 'S' is given to those who fulfill the following two requirements: a) they are taking the class for the first time and b) they got a minimum of 95% of overall points.

授業計画

第1回 The Art of Preparing and Delivery an Informative Speech

Students learn the basics of speech-making. They learn the three main sections of a standard speech.


第2回 Informative Speech Practice

Students work in small groups to practice giving informative speeches. The presentations are followed by Q&A and individual feedback in form of an assignment.


第3回 The Art of Arguing an Opinion

Students learn how to construct an opinion and support it with arguments.


第4回 Opinion Speech Practice

Students work in small groups to practice making opinion speeches while utilizing the skills learned in week-1.
The presentations are followed by Q&A and an individual feedback in form of an assignment.


第5回 The Art of Debating

Students learn the elements of a debate.


第6回 Debate Preparation Session

Students work in small groups to prepare for the debate in week-7


第7回 Debate Technique Practice

Students practice debating utilizing the presentation skills learned in weeks 1, 3 and 5.
The debates are followed by open discussions and an individual feedback in form of an assignment.


第8回 The Art of Conducting and Reporting a Survey

Students learn how to conduct a survey and give a speech about.


第9回 Survey Speech Practice

Students in small groups practice giving a survey speech.
The presentations are followed by a Q&A session and an individual feedback in form of an assignment.


第10回 The Art of Power-point Presentations

Students learn all the facets of using visual aids in a speech.


第11回 Final Presentation and Open Discussion (Group #1)

Students put it together by combining everything they have learned during the term. Each presentation is followed by a feedback from the audience and a short discussion.


第12回 Final Presentation and Open Discussion (Group #2)

Students put it together by combining everything they have learned during the term. Each presentation is followed by a feedback from the audience and a short discussion.


第13回 Skill Review Session-1

Students work in small groups to review the presentation skills related to the standard, informative and opinion speech making. At the end of the session, each student fills up and submit an evaluation progress review form to be provided by the instructor.


第14回 Skill Review Session-2

Students work in small groups to review the presentation skills related to the techniques of debating, survey speech and power-point presentation. At the end of the session, each student fills up and submit an evaluation progress review form to be provided by the instructor.


第15回 Overall Review, Feedback and Open Discussion

Students hold an open discussion to comment on both their individual progress and the overall evaluation of the course. The session also provides student with the opportunity to catch up with any of the presentation skills that were studied in the course.
