科目概要

In this course, we will focus on the methodology(methodologies) of qualitative research that serves any inquiry into the themes of language and culture. We will not focus on individual methods and techniques (such as interviews and focus-group discussions), but rather on the diverse approaches and the intellectual foundations of these approaches. The course will consist of reading seminars where participating students present a summary of the readings with possible discussion topics, followed by discussion in class. Towards the end of the term, students will also be required to reflect on how they can incorporate and develop the readings into their own research topic and methodology on language and culture.
この授業では、言語と文化の問題を研究する際の質的調査の方法論を扱います。ここでは（インタビューやフォーカス・グループ・ディスカッションなどの）調査の方法と技法に着目するのではなく、質的調査へのアプローチの多様さと、それぞれのアプローチがどのような知的土台に立脚しているのかを理解し、議論できるようになることを目指します。具体的には、このような発想に立ってデザインされた研究書を輪読しつつ、学期末に向けて、それぞれの参加者が言語と文化に関するテーマについて、今回学ぶ内容を研究にどのように生かし、展開できるかを考察し、発表していくことになります。

(This course will be offered on-line through Zoom, and students will need to participate with their cameras on. If the situation permits, we may offer the possibility of a hybrid option towards the end of the semester, where some students participate in classroom while others do so on-line. We will be coordinating on this with the participating students at the beginning of the course.)

In this course, we will focus on the methodology(methodologies) of qualitative research that serves any inquiry into the themes of language and culture. We will not focus on individual methods and techniques (such as interviews and focus-group discussions), but rather on the diverse approaches and the intellectual foundations of these approaches. The course will consist of reading seminars where participating students present a summary of the readings with possible discussion topics, followed by discussion in class. Towards the end of the term, students will also be required to reflect on how they can incorporate and develop the readings into their own research topic and methodology on language and culture. We center on sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, while being open to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches.

（この授業はZoomを使用してオンラインで実施され、参加学生はカメラをオンにして参加することが必要です。ただし、状況が許せば学生の一部がキャンパスで教室で参加できるようなハイブリッド形式での実施を検討します。授業開始時点で、この点は学生たちと相談しながら決定します。）
