科目概要
This is a graduate-level course taught in English. The focus of the course is on the design, practice, and analysis of survey fieldwork, mainly in Asia and mainly in developing countries. The objective is to enable graduate students to do Master's-level surveys and fieldwork as a major input to their theses. If you have already done fieldwork or plan to do it this course is for you.
Overview and Pathway:
Students should consider the following: How are we to survey and understand the impacts that modernization and development programs have produced on the natural environments and the populations of developing countries? How do we base participatory and sustainable development must be based on accurate knowledge of the daily practices, needs and skills of the local area and its ecology?

主題と目標/授業の手法など
Academic research and theses require original research results. We learn and practice methods for on-site surveys. These include quantitative methods (observing, collecting, and analyzing data), and qualitative methods (social surveys through interviewing and questionnaires).
From these methods we seek to gain skills for a better understanding of the regional, national, and local circumstances that we survey.
First the course will briefly consider economic statistics based on aggregate (national-level) data and also conventional social surveys.
We then look at different methods of designing and implementing social survey research for local environments and loccal communities in developing regions of Asia.
These include 'grounded' survey methods based on empirical data we take in local environments with local populations. Finally we look for ways of overcoming obstacles and issues we face in some types of fieldwork which may include:
1) Site population and community surveys
2) Environmental conditions and changes surveys
3) Health impacts surveys
4) Impacts of economic globalization surveys
Each student will make regular oral reports and submit 1 final research work during the term. The beginning and mid-term oral reports of 15 minutes will be based on his / her analysis of the course reading materials. with a question-and-answer session with the other students. The final oral report will be a presentation on the student's own planned or completed fieldwork, applying what they have learned from the readings and discussions. The final assignment is a research work on the student's own fieldwork.

提出課題・試験・成績評価の方法など
There will be short presentations on the course readings, and one final oral presentation, based on methodologies learned from the readings and lectures, the student's own research design, and fieldwork findings or anticipated findings. At the end of the term the student will submit a research work based on the final presentation on his / her own fieldwork.
