Tackling Global Issues / Academic Writing

Course Description:
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Academic Writing. The content is geared towards tackling current global and societal issues and there is a strong emphasis on the relationships with the United Nations’ current Sustainable Development Goals. Students learn to express their opinions in an informed manner using scholarly research techniques and accurate referencing to support their ideas. We study the three main essay formats: the expository essay, the compare and contrast essay and the argumentative essay and students learn how to use a detailed rubric in order to include all the necessary elements of an academic essay.
Content can include:
- Ecology and the environment
- Human rights
- Current affairs
- New technologies & concepts
- Current or historical issues (politics, science, mass media, etc)
- Cultural Issues
- etc.
This course is best suited for students who are reasonably comfortable taking instruction and participating in class in English, and who want to develop confidence when presenting in front of audiences.
Students pass the course when they successfully complete all assigned course work. Final grades are compiled from attendance, classroom participation, completed homework assignments, and assigned presentations. Students are reminded to pay particular attention to university attendance regulations. Class interaction via Moodle use is a mandatory course requirement and will be assessed in relation to the final grade. Plagiarism is totally unacceptable.

- To demonstrate & improve active listening skills for interaction.
- To interact effectively in small groups to complete assignments.
- To successfully learn and understand how to structure academic essays in English.
