Translating Postwar Japanese Literature (C)


Type:Composition

Course Description:

In this class, you will read samples of representative Japanese literature produced after the Second World War. You will gain hands-on translation experience by translating key passages into English while thinking about the historical context and discussing the texts and your translations with your classmates.



Learning outcomes:


  • Gain hands-on translation experience

  • Develop critical thinking skills by translatingdifficult or "untranslatable"Japanese expressions

  • Discuss and debate the meaning of the texts

  • Improve overall writing skills by answering short essay questions



Teacher's comment:

  • Schedule may change.

  • Lecture notes, assignments and homework will be posted on the SFC-SFS course page.

  • Points will be deducted for poor attitude (frequent tardiness etc.) and/or breaking class rules (copying, etc.).

  • Note to international students: this class requires fairly high Japanese reading proficiency.

履修上の注意

Not doing translation assignments will affect your grade greatly. Make-up assignments for absences can only be submitted if the absence is excused (you had a good reason for missing class).
