科目概要

This course will investigate Japanese Cultural Identity both from the perspective of the Japanese themselves and how the Japanese are seen by the outside world. Using a variety of print and visual media, we will examine the history of Japanese national identity and how it has changed over time.
Each student will be expected to do a short presentation and write an essay.

教材・参考文献

Short to medium length texts and film clips will be assigned in class. Students are expected to actively engage with the class by suggesting works relevant to each week's topic.

第1回 Introduction

- What does it mean to be Japanese?
- How does Japanese culture differ from the cultures of other East Asian countries?


第2回 Birth of Japan – Edo Japan

- the Kojiki and other mythology about the origins of Japan
-the Tokugawa Shogunate and Japanese isolationism
-early contact with other cultures (the Chinese, Koreans, the Portuguese, the Dutch)


第3回 The Meiji Period in Japan & Japanism in 19th century Europe

-the industrialization of Japan and how this changed how the Japanese saw themselves
Focus: art and photography from the exhibition “Yokohama 1868-1912: When Pictures Learned to Shine”, Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt am Main, 2017.
-how the export of Japanese culture affected European culture
Focus: Gilbert & Sullivan’s Mikado, Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Gustav Klimt


第4回 Early 20th Century Japan

Focus: early cinema and photography in Japan, the role of the Benshi in educating movie-going audiences about foreign cultures, censorship and propaganda


第5回 The Pacific War / WWII

- we will examine Japanese, British and American animation and cartoons and see how popular culture was used to promote nationalist interests.
- How do the Japanese depict themselves? How are the Japanese depicted in foreign media? What impact did this media have on the general populace? Has there been a lasting legacy of the stereotypes depicted in these media?


第6回 The American Occupation and Post-War Japan

- how the Americans controlled what kind of stories could be told in print and on film
- the recovery of the Japanese film industry
- the depiction of Japan in post-war Hollywood movies (John Wayne war movies, etc.)


第7回 The Impact of Japanese Cinema on Western Culture and Vice Versa

- from Pabst & Ford to Kurosawa, Mizoguchi & Ozu to Lucas, Spielberg, Coppola & Wim Wenders


第8回 Nihonjinron

- the rise of the study of Japanese national identity in post-war Japan


第9回 1960s and 1970s Counter Culture

- an examination of Japanese artists who challenged mainstream notions of “Japanese-ness”


第10回 Otaku culture

- how Japanese culture (anime, manga, video games) is received abroad
- what attracts people to Japanese culture?


第11回 Minority Cultures

- how minority cultures in Japan are finding a voice of their own in the 21st century
possible topics: Ainu, Ryukyuans, Bunraku, JSL community, LGBTQ, Disability Rights Movement, Zainichi, Chinese community, etc.


第12回 Japan Today

- a discussion of how Japan presents itself to the outside world
topics: "Cool Japan", the 1964 Olympics vs. the 2020 Olympics
