Expressing Oneself on Issues of 'Omotenashi'

Course Description:

In one yeartime,Japan will host the most prestigious sports event, the Olympics. No wonder that cities across the country have been coming up with ideas of how the country should present itself to the rest of the world. Students of this coursewill explore aspects of Omotenashiwith the aim of improving their language needs. The primary skill target of the course is presentation.



Learning outcomes:

The course provides an opportunity to improve the way students can communicate their thoughts. Class activities are carefully designed to help students develop other skills ofreading, listening and discussion. At the end of the term, students will be able to express their personal thoughts with ease and logic.



Teacher's comment:

This class is fun. Students need to attend a minimum of 10 classes to be considered for evaluation. (S) is given to those who: 1) have attended all the classes; 2) have handed in assignments on time; 3) achieved 95 percent of overall points and 4) have been activeduring discussions.

第1回 #1

The Art of Q&A and Preparation for a Primary Speech

Students reviewthe basics of English sentences and how to ask/answer questions.


第2回 #2

Introducing Oneself and Small Group Feedback

Using a pre-made sample of introductory speech, students practice how tointroducethemselves in small groups. The presentations are followed by a feedback from classmates.

The Art of Reporting

Students learn the fundamentals of giving a report on the basis of what they have read.


第4回 #4

Individual Reports Session

Using the skills learned in Week 3, students work in small group to present a report on general aspects of Omotenashi. The reports are followed by Q&A sessions from the audience mirroring skills of Week 1.

The Art of Speechmaking

Students learn how to prepare a standard speech that includes opening, development and closing.


第6回 #6

Standard Speech Session (Group 1)

Using the skills learned in Week 5, students give short speeches on topics related to aspects of Omotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions from the audience to mirror the skills of Week 1.

Standard Speech Session (Group 2)

Using the skills learned in Week 5, students give short speeches on topics related to aspects of Omotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions from the audience to mirror the skills of Week 1.

The Art of Arguing an Opinion

Students learn the various elements for arguing and presentingan opinion.

OpinionSpeech Session (Group 1)

Using the skills learned in Week 8, students practice how to give opinion speeches on the real benefits ofOmotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions from the audience to mirror theskills of Week 1.

OpinionSpeech Session (Group 2)

Using the skills learned in Week 8, students practice how to give opinion speeches on the real benefits ofOmotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions from the audience to mirror theskills of Week 1.


第11回 #11

The Art of Conducting a Survey and Making a Power-point Presentation

Students learn how to conduct a survey and to integrate its result in a speech.


第12回 #12

Putting It Altogether

Students work in small groups to prepare for final presentations.

Final Presentations (Group 1)

Using all the skills learned in Week 2, 3, 5, 8 and 11 students give their final presentation on topics related to Omotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions and open discussions.

Final Presentations (Group 2)

Using all the skills learned in Week 2, 3, 5, 8 and 11 students give their final presentation on topics related to Omotenashi. Speeches are followed by Q&A sessions and open discussions.


第15回 #15

Final Overall Review,Open Discussion and Feedback

Students review the various skills they have learned during the term for further improving their skills.
