科目概要

In this course, students will get hands-on exercises on field survey and analytical skills in the fields of environmental science. The objective of the course is to learn the skills and techniques which can approach local and regional environmental issues from diversified standpoints. Hands-on exercises are namely: conducting field survey on biota, exploring publicly available data (both biotic and abiotic variables), generating necessary data-sets, analyzing organism-environment relations. The lecturer will give an explanation on a variety of field survey and analytical methods and guide students to conduct a study. Students are expected to pick a topic on their own and work on their project using the techniques they have learned in the course. Students who will register this course are expected to think by themselves, and to be actively involved in group work to carry their study and present the results in the final class.

授業シラバス

主題と目標/授業の手法など

In this class, students will learn the survey skills regarding the environment from perspectives of natural science. The objective of this class is to let students acquire the skills to 1) plan and conduct a field survey, 2) analyze data, and 3) summarize results as a report. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will not conduct field surveys together around SFC. Students will make a field survey in their surroundings.

教材・参考文献

References will be introduced during the class.

提出課題・試験・成績評価の方法など

20% attendance, 20% assignments, 30% mid-term individual presentation, 30% the final individual report.

履修上の注意

This class will be held in English.

授業計画

第1回 Introduction (10/2)

The aim, contents, and evaluation criteria of the course are introduced.

第2回 Understanding the landscape (10/2)

Students will learn the skills of reading a landscape. Students make a fieldwork on their own to relate topography and land-uses of their surrounding environment.

第3回 Organisms and the environment [theory] (10/9)

Students will learn how the environment influences the distribution and abundance of organisms.

第4回 Surveying birds [theory] (10/9)

Students are introduced to methods how ecological data are collected from field. We will take an example from the national survey 'Monitoring Site 1000 Satoyama Birds'.

第5回 Analyzing data [exercise] (10/16)

Students are given a hands-on exercise to analyze bird data collected from the national survey. We will work as a group in collating necessary information. [laptop required]

第6回 Analyzing data [exercise] (10/16)

Students will choose a research topic and continue to summarize the data accordingly. [laptop required]

第7回 Mid-term presentation (10/23)

Students will give a presentation on their study. [laptop required]

第8回 Plant Ecology [theory] (10/23)

Students are introduced to plant ecology. They will learn methods to examine how plant communities are structured.

第9回 Surveying plants [theory] (10/30)

Students are introduced to methods how plant data are collected from field.

第10回 Surveying plants [theory] (10/30)

Students make a fieldwork on their own to collect plant data from a place nearby.

第11回 Analyzing data [exercise] (11/6)

Students are given a hands-on exercise to analyze plant data. We will work as a group in collating necessary information. [laptop required]

第12回 Analyzing data [exercise] (11/6)

Students continue summarizing the data and share their findings in class. Students will write a final report on this topic. [laptop required]

第13回 Make-up class

Reading and writing assignments will be given during the course.
