科目概要

The coronavirus has created its expansive impact on every aspect of life: health, employment, economy, entertainment, and family life among others. It has posed challenges not only to how people cope up with the virus while keeping up with their living on the daily basis. It has also challenged the governance ability of governments across the world which is constantly put to test given unpredictable developments of the virus. Compared with other continents, Asia has shown a more efficient management of the situation with a smaller number of infections and a slower spread of the virus. However, Asia couldn’t avoid mounting challenges including the impacts on the economy, the disruptions to people’s daily life, and the questionability of the style of governance.

Asia Workshop 2020 aims at providing a forum for students to expose themselves to the voices of professionals of different expertise, to the voices of local people in order to better understand how Asian countries have dealt with the situation and how people have adjusted their living to this new normalcy.
Topics for discussions include:
- Governments’ responses and People’s narratives
- Health Initiatives from Japan
- Local Voice from Wuhan
- Online world through the pandemic
- Closing and Reopening
- New Normalcy
- Environment Risks in the context of the pandemic
- Migrant workers

授業シラバス

主題と目標/授業の手法など

The course is to provide a framework of “communities under risk” in order to examine how different stakeholders, from the state to the individuals, deal with constant changes as the pandemic evolves and how they approached other accompanying problems while the coronavirus has become the focal point of attention. Insights provided by guest speakers will cover a wide range of issues including those in Japan and other countries in Asia.

教材・参考文献

We will provide online the basic readings, to be announced later. We do encourage the students to familialize themselves with the use of JSTOR (a massive online library of journal essays from more than 500 English academic journals over the past 70 years.)

提出課題・試験・成績評価の方法など

The Course is open to both undergraduate students from SFC and Hiyoshi Campuses. The course is conducted in English. The performance of the students are based on students’ attendance, in-class participation, group work, and final assignments. Final Assignments: Poster Presentation and Take-home assignment

履修上の注意

Though conducted in English, the instructors of the workshop are willing to assist the students who may have the language difficulties keeping up with the workshop.
